Success Stories: Construction Apprenticeships

Phillip McConnell

In March 2009, Phil approached SouthBank Training Limited as he wanted access to a construction programme but also wanted support in improving his Maths and English.  He commenced the Entry to Employment Programme at SBT in Barton on 23rd March 2009.  Phil had an impeccable attendance record throughout his programme and always displayed a positive eagerness to improve his key skills, to enable him to progress on to the Trowel Apprenticeship programme with SBT in North Street.  Phil also attended the Construction centre for work experience 2 days a week and in May successfully achieved his Numeracy Level 1, Literacy Level 1, CIEH Level 2 and Entry 3 Certificate in Skills for Working Life, which gave him the stepping stone to progress in June 09.

He started on the Brickwork Diploma Level 2 on the 22nd June 2009.  His attendance record in the workshop has been excellent and he as achieved most of the practical elements of the Diploma on the first attempt.  He has already completed unit 1001, and almost completed units 2002, 2047, 2048.

On 24th November 2009, Phil commenced work experience for a large building company to enable him to gain the evidence required for his NVQ L2.  We visited him on site recently and we were amazed at how well he had fitted in with the other workforce; speaking to his site foreman he had nothing but admiration for the young learner.   Phil’s tremendous commitment to fulfil his Apprenticeship deserves recognition and we would like to congratulate Phil on all his accomplishments.

‘Golden Hellos’ to Employers to take Apprentices

The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) is to provide up to 5,000 ‘golden hellos’ of £2,500 to encourage employers to take on new 16-17 year old apprentices, worth a total of £12.5m in a short term measure available to potential employers of apprentices between New Year and April 2010.

The £2,500 is in addition to the costs of training with the funding administered by NAS, who will also be able to support employers in finding a training provider and recruiting an apprentice. Employers will commit to taking on a new or additional apprentice in paid employment for the duration of their training. The Minimum Apprenticeships Wage requirement (£95 per week for 16-18 year olds) will apply. In return up to 5,000 employers will receive a £2,500 bonus and NAS will cover the full Apprenticeship training costs, as it would for any 16-18 year old Apprentice.

The funding will target those employers who would not otherwise have been in a position to recruit an Apprentice at this point in time or who are able to offer more Apprenticeship places than they would otherwise have done. Interested employers should call the NAS help line on 08000 150 600 or view the full article here.

Framework for Excellence

YOUR EXPERIENCE, YOUR SAY:  Make a difference to how we deliver training to employers

We wish to thank all our employers who have taken part in the Framework for Excellence survey so far this year.  This important survey is in its second year and is part of the Framework for Excellence initiative. This Framework will provide a new national performance measure to ensure high standards in all educational and training establishments.

The aim of the survey is to ensure that we can provide and continually improve on the services which employers deem most valuable and, in turn, respond to any changes in your needs as efficiently as possible. SouthBank Training Ltd would like to thank you for your time and co-operation and are grateful for your feedback, which in all cases will remain anonymous. The survey period runs between October 2009 to 31st December 2009.

Young Apprentice Fundraising Success

The BBC recently released the final total for the Children In Need 2008 Appeal, and SouthBank Training Ltd’s Young Apprentices celebrated the news with the presentation of their certificates that they achieved for their fundraising efforts.  The 2008 appeal raised £20,991,216 on the night, and it has recently been released that the grand total is a staggering £36 million.

The Young Apprentices, based in the Grimsby Centre, raised a total of £217.57 for the charity.   Abbie Gowan, a pupil from Whitgift School explains:

“Friday 14th November we ran a Swap Shop at Whitgift School.  This was to raise money for children in need, we did a lot of fun and games starting with a raffle which started off at 20p and we had people having a go on the High School Musical dance mat where they had to follow the steps on the mat and they paid 15p to have a go.  We also had refreshments which we were selling for 5p each.  At the end of the day we raised a grand total of £217.57 which goes to Children in need. Also the BBC Radio Humberside came to the school to talk to us about what was going on at out school that day.”
