With fewer University places available, additional Government funding is being released to give an extra 50,000 people the opportunity to gain an Apprenticeship.

If you are considering taking on an Apprentice, now is a great time, as thousands of school leavers begin looking for their first steps into a career.

With the recent success in the country’s high GCSE and A-Level results, now is the time for businesses to recruit an Apprentice from the pool of talent out there.  With the release of additional funding employers can also seek to train their existing staff and recruit junior managers, offering quality roles to A-Level students as an alternative to the university clearing process.

“We will increase the number of Apprenticeship places, and we are committed to improving the quality of Apprenticeships to make them better suited to the needs of employers and learners.  The Government’s decision to redeploy £150 million of  our savings in 2010-11, creating an additional 50,000 places, demonstrates our commitment to high-quality, employer-owned Apprenticeships” (Vincent Cable: Secretary of State, Business, innovation and Skills)

Recruiting young people has never been easier. ‘Apprenticeship Vacancies’ is the official online recruitment system for Apprenticeships in England and is managed by the National Apprenticeship Service.
The system enables quality vacancies from employers like you to be viewed and applied for nationally by thousands of candidates that register onto our system, making it easy for you to attract and recruit Apprentices.

Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to start their career and many are keen to take this route.  Each Apprenticeship framework is developed by employers (through Sector Skills Councils and Sector Bodies) to suit the sector in which they sit.  There is empirical evidence that Apprenticeships bring real value to employers, learners and the economy as a whole.

Potential Apprentices can register with ‘Apprenticeship Vacancies’, an online recruitment tool that matches Apprentices with prospective employers.  They can search for local and national vacancies in their required job role and level.

This system also has several key benefits to employers:

  • It is a national system, it opens up your vacancy to a wider pool of candidates actively interested in Apprenticeships
  • A diverse range of private and public sector employers have already advertised their vacancies including British Gas, Ford, New Look, Sky and Cable&Wireless
  • Flexibility in who manages the whole recruitment process, your learning provider or you
  • The options to direct candidates who see your vacancy on the system to apply directly to your own website job page
  • You can search to find learning providers who deliver Apprenticeships in the sector you want to recruit for
  • The system is supported by a dedicated National Apprenticeship Service team across England

We wish to thank all our employers who have taken part in the Framework for Excellence survey so far this year.  This important survey is in its second year and is part of the Framework for Excellence initiative. This Framework will provide a new national performance measure to ensure high standards in all educational and training establishments.

Construction skills on the horizon with the launch of the SouthBank Training Skills Centre

The newly refurbished SouthBank Training Ltd Skills Centre located on North Street in the centre of Scunthorpe, has provided existing SouthBank learners with an opportunity to experience life in the construction field.

Our new provision at the Skills Centre North Street, heralded recently by the Scunthorpe Telegraph as North Lincolnshire’s fully equipped construction resource, offering opportunities to develop bricklaying and joinery skills for 14 to 18 year olds.

The new SouthBank Centre also now houses the E2E programme, allowing for the programme to incorporate manual skills into its framework.

The Skills Centre hosts a range of facilities and large workshop areas allowing for the adequate facilitation of the newly acquired construction provision.

Managing Director Sue Bloomfield said “When the North Street site became available, my first thought was to use the North Street site to develop our Key Stage 4 engagements, in which we work with seven schools in North Lincolnshire. My idea was to expand that into joinery and brickwork and then we were asked by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to pick up the construction provision and see how we could put together a way of progressing these young people.”

“I think it is important that individual training providers become involved in schemes like this and it is also important for employers because we are talking about the workers of tomorrow.”

The new facility also allows learners to complete the Intermediate Construction Award (ICA).  The ICA is a single award that is broken into separate routes such as the Bricklaying route and Site Carpentry route, which is designed to prepare people for work in a particular construction occupation.  The ICA is specifically designed to enhance the construction workforce of tomorrow by using a simulated environment to ensure that the essential construction skills are developed to a high standard.
